Over the last several months, I have been helping our students at BitTiger prepare to interview at some of the top tech companies in the US. What started as some basic lessons on resume correction and interview question preparation, became a deeper lesson on how American cultural habits influence how US companies interview potential candidates.

Today, I put together a short guide on four American cultural ideals and how they impact what an American interviewer will be looking for. I also provide suggestions on how you can change your answer in the interview to best fit these cultural ideals.

#1 The famous “American Dream” is based on the idea that anyone can succeed if they work hard enough. This cultural ideal makes individual work performance within a company very important

How this should impact your interview answers:

o Whenever you are talking about past projects that you completed in your job or at school, make sure you emphasize your individual contribution to the project

o While, it is OK to mention all aspects of a project, even those you did not personally complete, you will need to make it clear which parts you worked on and why your contribution was significant

o For example: Let’s say that for a school project, you built a full stack application with several other students and your focus was on the back-end server scripting.

>In your explanation of the project, begin first by giving an overview of the entire application

>Then spend the majority of the time detailing the key design decisions and engineering choices you made in order to make the server side part of the application successful

>Be prepared for detailed questions from the interviewer on your individual contributions

#2 Americans expect that most work can be done autonomously with only minimum supervision from managers

How this should impact your interview answers:

o When you discuss past work experiences, emphasize how you were able to manage your own time and independently decide how to approach a complex task

o Also mention times where you overcame small challenges on your own without bringing in more help

o Using the same school full stack app school project example:

>Mention how you took the initiative to set out a work plan for the project so all team members knew when their tasks were due.

>And when you ran into an engineering challenge, you were able to research common solutions online and implement an existing open source library that solved your group’s challenges

#3 Americans have a very direct style of communication, where saving face is less important.

How this should impact your interview answers:

o Be open to admitting failures when asked about times that you struggled: interviewers want to see that you can both admit to failure and learn from your failures

o If you have researched the company thoroughly before the interview, you can also feel comfortable giving suggestions on what you would improve with their product or processes, especially at small companies that are shifting quickly

o Here is a good example response to the question “Tell me about a time that you failed”:

>When I first started working at my last job I took on several projects that used programming languages I had not yet learned.

>I took it as a challenge to push myself, but I soon found I was struggling to keep up with my deadlines.

>I learned from this to determine the full scope of all assignments before I take on new projects, so I can openly tell my manager when I believe I will be unable to complete everything on time

#4 Americans expect people to think for themselves and to express their own opinions and ideas

How this should impact your interview answers:

o When talking about past work experiences make sure to emphasize times when you helped make a critical and creative decision that helped the project be more successful

o It’s important to highlight that you can both think creatively on your own, and you can convince others that your ideas are strong

o For example:

>If you were working on a machine learning project at a past job, helping to create an e-commerce product recommendation engine, mention that you did your own research on newly emerging machine learning libraries and found a new and more effective one

>After bringing the idea up to your manager and team with your research presented clearly, you were able to convince the team to change strategies

If you are preparing to interview at a US company, it’s important to look at US culture to help modify how you plan to answer common interview questions. The hiring managers that have grown up working in the US will have internalized these cultural ideas, and these ideas will impact the way the interviewer views potential employees.
